Integrating Software and Hardware Reliability Predictions Training Class
This website has moved to http://missionreadysoftware.com Redirecting now...
Software reliability predictions and hardware reliability predictions can be integrated to yield a system reliability prediction. The system reliability objective can then be tracked during the development of both the hardware and software. If necessary, tradeoffs may be performed between hardware and software functionality. There are several methods available ranging from simple to detailed.
Available methods
-
Reliability Block Diagram - Predictions for the software LRUs (Line Replaceable Units) are placed onto the reliability block diagram such that the software LRU predictions are in series with the appropriate hardware LRU predictions. This sounds simple but in many cases the software LRUs have functionality that span across several hardware LRUs.
-
System fault tree analysis - The system fault tree is prepared to include software faults. The software LRU predictions are computed and are apportioned to the software root causes on the system fault tree based on historical data from a similar system, test data or best engineering judgement. The failure rate of the entire fault tree is then computed.
-
Integration by duty cycle - The predictions can be combined based on the duty cycle of the software and hardware components. The mission model is used for systems with a defined mission time such as aircraft, missiles, or spacecraft. The operational profile model is used when the system is continually operating or there are many end users performing different functions.
Course Objectives
Learn how to merge the software and hardware reliability predictions to yield a subsystem or system prediction. Some methods for merging include the system Reliability Block Diagram or a Fault Tree Analysis. The IEEE 1633 Recommended Practices for Software Reliability Training class is a prerequisite. This class will also present how to measure the software reliability during testing and operation.
